The reality of the devastating fires in Maui is still being uncovered.

The wildfires in Maui are being called the “deadliest US Wildfire in more than a century”. Over the weekend three wildfires continued to burn in Maui, Hawaii with 86% of the affected buildings being residential; meaning that individuals’ homes are being destroyed and negatively impacted, and all of people’s possessions in their homes as well.

Overly dry vegetation that acted as fuel, the ongoing drought, strong winds from Hurricane Dora, a high-pressure system and dryness of the atmosphere made for a devastating combination that allowed the flames to spread at a faster pace than firefighters could contain them.”

This has resulted in thousands of buildings destroyed and the number people who have died due to the wildfires continues to increase, with 106 people confirmed dead (as of August 16th) and hundreds more still missing. Only 27% of the burned areas of Maui have been searched; meaning that many others have been negatively impacted and need aide.

Maui Food Bank’s mission is to help the hungry in Maui County by collecting and distributing food through community partnerships.

We spoke with Marlene Rice, Maui Food Bank Development Director yesterday, and she said the biggest form of support that they need right now to aide residents of Maui is financial assistance.

Due to the outpouring of assistance already provided, Maui Food Bank has been able to distribute over 250,000 pounds of food to residents in-need in the past 6 days alone!

The need will continue to grow as more information is provided and more residents are able to communicate the devastation that has hit their towns and homes. To assist residents in-need in the next coming months, Maui Food Bank has scheduled 20 containers of food from the mainland to be brought to Hawaii over the next six months.

Assistance and aide are not only needed right now in the present; it will be essential to survival over the coming months as clean-up and rebuilding efforts are underway.

Presently over 2,000 people have been displaced; with that number anticipated to increase. Your donations will ensure that residents continue to receive essential food bank services now and in the coming months when it will still be just as necessary.
