Summer isn’t just about sunny days and school vacation. This season is also a good reminder to slow down and enjoy the bounties of nature. Farmers markets and grocery stores are bursting with the colors of fresh, seasonal produce, and we’re highlighting a few government benefit programs that can help you eat well this summer.

Nutrition Assistance Programs

For low-income families and seniors struggling to purchase enough nutritious food, the SNAP and WIC programs are great resources that provide cash assistance or food vouchers to use at grocery stores and farmers markets.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): SNAP provides benefits to eligible individuals and families via an Electronic Benefits Transfer card. This card can be used like a debit card to purchase eligible food in authorized retail food stores.

The SNAP program is an excellent way to supplement your family’s diet with nutritious foods. Some items covered through the program include fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, dairy products, and more.

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC): WIC is one of the largest nutrition assistance programs in the United States, assisting about 40% of America’s infants. This program provides supplemental foods, nutrition education, and access to health and social services to low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five.

WIC also sponsors the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). The WIC FMNP provides coupons for fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs to individuals certified to receive WIC program benefits. FMNP coupons can be redeemed at approved farms, farmers markets, or roadside stands.

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP): The SFMNP program provides low-income seniors with coupons that can be exchanged for fruits, vegetables, honey, and fresh-cut herbs at farmers markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture (CSA) programs.

Individuals must be at least 60 years old to qualify. Seniors already receiving SNAP benefits may be automatically eligible.

Sunny Snacks and Meals

Summer vacation is an exciting time for school-aged children, but it can also mean food insecurity for those who depend on schools for regular meals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) SUN Meals program provides free, nutritious snacks and meals to children under 18 while school is not in session. Meals are also available for people with disabilities who are over 18 and participate in school programs for the mentally or physically disabled.
